Aloha Ke Na Mano (Love For The Shark)|
Red dirt + oil on canvas
42" x 70"
Aloha Ke Na Mano (Love For The Shark) is a celebration of the fact that in 2010 Hawai'i (the first place on Earth) passed a law to protect all sharks from the torture of "finning". This barbaric act involves shearing off the dorsal and pectoral fins as well as the tail and dumping the still live body back into the sea. The fins and tail are collected and sold to accommodate the insatiable demand for shark fin soup. The absurd concoction is tasteless and non-nutritive, yet sells for up to, and in excess of, $400 US per bowl the world over in "fine" restaurants.
